class: center, middle, inverse, title-slide # Global land-use and land-cover (LULC) data under historical, current, and future climatic conditions for ecologists ## OLS 2 final presentation ### Tainá Rocha & Mariana Vale ### Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil ### 14th December 2020 (updated: 2021-06-08) --- Main goals 1- It makes more accessible the Land-use harmonization (LUH2) data, once these data are in netcdf format that is not manageable for most ecology analysis. 2- And also, we provide new data from the raw data --- The Land-use Harmonization database (https://luh.umd.edu/) - primf: forested primary land - primn: non-forested primary land - secdf: potentially forested secondary land - secdn: potentially non-forested secondary land - pastr: managed pasture - range: rangeland - urban: urban land - c3ann: C3 annual crops - c3per: C3 perennial crops - c4ann: C4 annual crops - c4per: C4 perennial crops - c3nfx: C3 nitrogen-fixing crops --- Why did I do this ? Mapping the Land-Use Land-Cover (LULC) changes through time is important to predict the threats or propose effective conservation policies and many other kinds of ecology studies (Torres et al 2014, Falcucci et al 2017, Hanna et al. 2020). --- Issues However most databases have a time-series limitation. Contrary to these databases, LUH2 covers historical, current and future land use projections. --- How did I do this ? I built R scripts following these steps : 1- To extract one by one layer 2- To save each single layer (which are a continuous layers) as a TIFF format, 3- To perform an analysis to combine all classes, generating categorical data, that's is new data produced here (LULC). 4- To validate LULC new data (in progress...) --- Github Repository: https://github.com/Tai-Rocha/LUH2_Data --- Results 1- Several continuous layers for each class and for each year from 850 to 2100 (Raw data in tiff format) --- Results 2- Land use land cover data (categorical layer) from each year. --- Next steps : 1- I need to optimize the R scripts 2- Improve the README 3- To put the layers in ecoClimate (https://www.ecoclimate.org/), another free database. --- References : Hanna, D.
